Forward into Light: The Passing of the 19th Amendment
On August 26, 2020, America celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment that gave (many) women the right to vote. Called “Forward into Light” the celebration encouraged people and organizations across the country to light up prominent buildings and monuments with purple and gold light. Kym Cochran of The Environment Makers brought us into the fray. A short 3 weeks after she proposed the idea, we put up lighting and simple projections at 3 places around Santa Barbara: El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, Casa de la Guerra, and the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. To help push the point home, along with artist Tracy Beeler, we also created a short movie called The Struggle for Women’s Suffrage. This was shown in the front window of Sullivan Goss Art Gallery and Rondo Studio.
